Chicago has joined some 40 other US cities in banning pet stores from selling dogs from for-profit breeders.
Chicago city aldermen have voted almost unanimously to ban pet stores in the city from selling dogs from puppy mills. Dog news and entertainment site Life with dogs quotes Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza:
“If you don’t want to change your way of doing business, I will not lose a wink of sleep knowing that we’ve put a bad business out of business in this city.”
In the UK, Pupaid is taking up the fight against puppy farms, the puppy mill equivalent. The organisation describes puppy farming as:
[T]he mass commercial production of puppies purely for profit and without a thought for the welfare or happiness of the pup, breeding bitch or stud dogs.
Over 100,000 people signed PupAid’s ‘Puppies to Parliament’ e-petition, which calls on the Government to ban puppy farming. That means it is guaranteed a debate in Parliament, which is expected to take place some time this month.
